Villa Gamberaia has created a collection of refined objects and accessories for its guests — and for anyone wishing to take home a fragment of its harmony, an authentic piece of Gamberaia.
From the elegant tins of the villa’s own extra virgin olive oil — a symbol of its deep bond with the Tuscan soil — to the sumptuous bathrobes and new bucket-shaped beach bags, each textile creation is crafted in striped canvas with leather trims, in the villa’s iconic hues: ivory and Gamberaia green, or ivory and ochre.
The textile collection — together with an exclusive line of straw hats — was born in collaboration with AFAR, a studio based in Ethiopia that adheres to the highest standards of ethical and sustainable production. Most of the cotton used for AFAR’s bags comes from small farming cooperatives in north-eastern Ethiopia, where cultivation still follows traditional methods: no pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizers, and no fossil fuels. Weeds are removed by hand, five times during the plants’ growth cycle.
The seeds are non-GMO, descended from the ancient varieties that produced the Ethiopian “tree wool” described by Pliny the Elder. Only rainwater is used for irrigation — an extraordinary fact, considering that conventional cotton farming can require up to 5,000 litres of water per kilo of fibre.
AFAR’s canvas is woven with a compact structure and twisted yarns for greater strength and a smooth surface, and is naturally water-repellent: designed to accompany the traveller and become the perfect companion for every journey.
